Trinity started with a vision given to the founding pastor, Dr. Charles Baker, as he saw people he knew in a building he had not seen. As events led him on that cold February 18th night in 1985, a few people chose to step out on faith and worship the Lord. This was truly a test of faith, because no one knew where the first meeting would take place. But God answers prayers and the meeting was held at the Church of the Redeemer, located at 1240 Center Street. The gracious members of that congregation opened their doors and their hearts to us.
A small number of twelve people attended that first meeting to pray and seek the Lord’s guidance. These people were the following charter members: Bro. Ronnie Amos, Sis. Wanda Bailey, Sis. Angie Baker, Bro. Charee Baker, Sis. Essie Baker, Sis. Deborah Bufford, Sis. Mildred McCullen, Sis. Nell McKinley, Sis. Tamela Parrish, Sis. Bettie Whitlock, Rev. Ronald E. Whitlock, and Sis. Veronica Young. Dr. Trinity Baptist Church was the name given to this new church and Dr. Baker was named as the first pastor.
This young church held its first Sunday worship service on February 24, 1985 at the Church of the Redeemer at 11:00am. Pastor Baker brought forth the message and at the invitation fifteen people joined the Trinity family. As the church continued to grow, land was purchased at the currently location (200 Center Street) and a church facility was erected. In September of 1986, the building was completed and ready for occupancy. In the fall of 1987, a house was donated to the church by the late Patricia Hicks. This building was named the Patricia Hicks Annex.
In August 1990, our founder, Dr. Charles Baker, was led to Chicago, IL, to become pastor of Zion Temple Baptist Church and in that same month Rev. Ron E. Whitlock, Sr. became Trinity’s second pastor. Under the leader ship of Pastor Whitlock the church began paying off its debts. In August of 1994 the church licensed its first female minister to preach the gospel. On that same evening, Trinity received a letter from the Union District Association, which informed the congregation that we could no longer be a part of the Association, because we had licensed a woman to preach the gospel. In the fall of 1995, Trinity became affiliated with the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship under the International Presiding Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. The church name was then changed to Trinity Full Gospel Baptist Church.
In September of 1999, Dr. Stacey L. Beason became Trinity’s third pastor. Since then, the church gained its 501©3 status, expanded and increased the existing areas of ministry and undergone a major face lift through renovation while continuing to be debt free. The church continues to grow in number and in spiritual maturity. To God be the Glory.
